Earlier this month, Scalar announced that it had been named one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies. With this announcement, I started to think about what makes Scalar the company that it is, and why I love doing what I do every day.
When I think about what it is like to work for Scalar, a few words quickly come to mind: flexibility, growth, innovative, and most importantly culture. As an employee working for a company that provides and cultivates these values is something that I hold with high regard.
The last few years Scalar has taken some big risks by acquiring several companies, and I was fortunate enough to be a part of one of these acquisitions. As you can imagine, with several companies merging together, a significant amount of change has occurred within Scalar. However, I believe that with great change comes great opportunity. For myself, it was an opportunity for growth. Not only for Scalar to grow as a company, but for several employees to grow their careers and skills. Prior to the acquisition, I was the Team Lead for a small team of 3 Inside Sales Reps in Alberta. Within a year of the acquisition, I was promoted to the National Inside Sales Manager and had acquired a team of 13. Not only did Scalar provide the opportunity to me, they also provided mentorship and gave me 100% support in the new role.
With experiencing extreme growth in a short period of time, Scalar has had to be innovative. We’ve introduced new HR methods and tools to assist with being a company of well over 300 employees. The tools have allowed managers and employees to track everything from work anniversaries, to goal setting and performance, as well as training, vacation, and so much more.
We also pride ourselves in having high eNPS survey results (employee net promoter score). eNPS measures the likelihood that an employee would recommend the company as a great place to work. Each quarter, all employees are encouraged to anonymously take part in the survey which allows our voices to be heard, and provide our Senior Leadership Team with a view into how employees feel about working at Scalar. These surveys can provoke new ideas and creative ways of thinking to ensure employees love coming to work every day.
The team has great synergy because every employee gives 110% and cares about the work we do. We work together as a team and across multiple departments to achieve our goals. When you work for a company that is team-oriented and fast paced, it is important that there is a balance between your work and personal life. Scalar offers flexibility for employees to create their own work-life balance, however they find it best for themselves. For myself, it is the ability to work from home whenever needed.
In my career, one thing I have always valued is workplace culture. At Scalar, many staff members feel like they’re part of a ‘work family’, and this culture is something that I’m proud to help cultivate. Our company values – Work as Team, Be Accountable, Push Forward, Have Fun, and Do the Right Thing, are at the core of our work ethic. These values allow us to work hard, but work together, have fun doing it, and really feel like family when you come in to work every day. Scalar understands the importance of bringing us all together throughout the year to keep this culture strong. Annual events such as our National Kick-Off with all employees across Canada, client holiday parties, Calgary Stampede, Vancouver Boat Cruise, kids’ holiday parties, and quarterly social committee events have given us many opportunities to come together and have fun as a team. We have also participated in numerous team sports and athletics outside of work.
There are many more reasons why I love my job and why I think Scalar is a great company. At the end of the day, I truly believe Scalar is a great place to work and am proud to call myself a Scalarite!
