Objective

Create, deliver and manage a customer-centric insurance offering built in AWS Cloud.

  • Design and implementation of highly available, redundant and fault tolerant dev/test and production environments
  • Establishment of a 24/7 managed cloud service help desk
  • AWS Cloud

Ontario-based Ignite Insurance rejects the idea that insurance must be complicated. A born-in-the-cloud company, the team at Ignite are a passionate group that offer its customers an engaging online insurance experience using modern tools, with a website that is intuitive and almost even fun. Specializing in property and casualty insurance, this fintech start-up does not have legacy IT systems hampering their innovation. From the outset, the company has leveraged the rapid elasticity and on-demand availability benefits that are inherent in the cloud.

Needing a platform that could scale dynamically and be able to handle volume as well as interchangeable workloads, Chief Information Officer, Rick Turola turned to the cloud technology solution experts at Scalar. “We had a very clear idea of what we wanted; we sat down with them to share our vision and they came back to us with the cloud architecture to support what we were building,” said Turola. “They’re good at listening and it is amazing to have a vendor that does not make you simply select off the menu – we described what we wanted and they made it happen.”

Approach

With its flagship product launching in fall, the Ignite team engaged Scalar early in the process to design, architect, and implement their infrastructure that is hosted with cloud platform provider, Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company required separately managed dev/test and production environments along with virtual private network (VPN) support so workers from around the world can securely log in. All the technology systems required to run the brokerage were included in the project scope. Everything from back office to customer facing applications were taken into consideration – including accounting and payroll workloads, the sales and marketing platform, and the self-service insurance transactional systems.

Scalar’s approach to cloud provides Ignite with a single pane of glass from which to manage all workloads running on AWS. While this visibility is essential to keeping tabs on the operation, of utmost importance to Turola is his ability to rely on Scalar for 24x7x365 helpdesk management. “Our goal is rapid deployment, extreme scalability and flexibility, and an excellent system, built and managed by experts. Scalar provides that to us,” said Turola.

Ignite strives for simplicity and effective management in their complex technological environment, looking to Scalar to provide a centralized helpdesk for all Ignite services. Turola refers to this as hyper management, meaning regardless of the technology vendor providing the solution, Scalar is the first point of contact. “I have found that everything we do with Scalar has been very well intentioned on their part. I feel like we have a partner at the table and they will help us figure out the best approach for us,” said Turola.

The team is now actively monitoring the workloads and disk space. “Patching is all happening quietly behind the scenes and any incidents that require our attention are raised to us through a help ticket,” said Turola. “This is how we want the service to behave.”

Looking Forward

With the cloud infrastructure built and day to day monitoring well in hand, Ignite are turning their attention to their security roadmap. First up is a threat risk assessment which will act to highlight any potential gaps in the company’s security posture. The risk assessment process documents key information assets and rates the impact and likelihood of risk scenarios, so the appropriate steps towards remediation can be taken.

Innovation and quick time to market are key to Ignite’s success, and the creation and delivery of a strategic IT operation play heavily into this equation. In their quest to provide Ontario insurance buyers a customer-centric, online insurance choice, Ignite are well on their way to making their vision a reality.

Our goal is rapid deployment, extreme scalability and flexibility, and an excellent system, built and managed by experts. Scalar provides that to us.
